Hyderabad: The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has questioned the rationale behind the Hyderabad Cricket Association’s (HCA) reported introduction of an “automatic selection mandate” for the Men’s Senior Super League for the 2026-27 season, alleging that the new criteria undermine merit, selector autonomy and the principles of transparency envisaged under the Justice R.M. Lodha Committee reforms and BCCI governance norms.

TCA General Secretary Dharam Guruva Reddy said, “How can an automatic selection mandate be justified in a competitive sport where current form, fitness and performance should be the primary criteria? Does such a provision not undermine the very principles of transparency and merit that sports administration is expected to uphold?”

The TCA said the HCA’s new Men’s Senior Super League Selection Guidelines 2026-27, particularly provisions that allegedly provide automatic qualification based on past seasons, represent a serious step backwards in domestic cricket administration.

According to the TCA, selection in competitive cricket must remain firmly anchored to current performance, fitness, form and potential rather than past entitlement. Automatically carrying forward qualifications from previous seasons, it argued, risks creating a closed selection system that could disadvantage high-performing district cricketers and players emerging through open trials.

The association also questioned the reported impact of the guidelines on the independence of the Selection Committee. If selection lists can be declared “null and void” for not adhering to predetermined automatic selection provisions, the TCA contended that selectors could effectively be reduced to mere implementers of administrative decisions rather than independent cricketing experts.

The TCA further sought clarity over the reported role of the Cricket Operations Committee (COC) and other administrative functionaries, including former India cricketer and HCA coordinator Ambati Rayudu, in determining or overseeing selection parameters.

“The selection process must be insulated from arbitrary administrative intervention. Cricketing decisions should be made by duly constituted selectors based on objective and transparent criteria,” Reddy said.
