Medak: Authorities have suspended a teacher at a government-run junior college after she reportedly forced a student to eat leaves of a plant as punishment for being talkative in the classroom. The college principal was also suspended by the district Collector.

The girl fell sick after the unusual punishment, prompting her parents to complain to the authorities and leading to the suspensions on Friday. The incident took place at the Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Junior College in Narsapur.

According to officials, the student was subjected to the punishment some time ago by the teacher, D Srilatha. The teacher reportedly forced the girl to eat leaves from a plant found on the college premises.

The student fell sick following the incident. After learning about the punishment, her parents complained to Medak district Collector Prathima Singh on Thursday. An inquiry was ordered, following which Srilatha and the college principal, Rajani, were suspended.

Action was also initiated against the principal for alleged negligence in the discharge of her duties.
