Hyderabad: The State-level Committee for Integrated Water Planning and Management (SCIWAM) has announced plans to extend irrigation support to nearly 43 lakh acres during the Rabi season of 2024-25. This decision, made during a meeting on Tuesday, will make approximately 350 TMC of water available under major and medium irrigation projects in both the Krishna and Godavari basins.

Water Release Schedule

The Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) will begin releasing water for Rabi crops from December 10, with the irrigation schedule for other major and medium projects starting effectively from December 15. The committee reviewed the storage capabilities of all projects and noted the adequate inflows received by the Jurala, Srisailam, and Nagarjuna Sagar projects, which had been dry for over a year.

Krishna basin support

The irrigation department plans to support nearly 12 lakh acres in the Krishna basin with Nagarjuna Sagar Project Left Canal giving water for 6.3 lakh acres, while the SLBC and other projects will cater to irrigation needs in 2 lakh acres

Jurala Project will support rabi irrigation in one lakh acres and the lift irrigation schemes and other sources under Srisailam will support some3 lakh acres.

SRSP Stage II

The committee has also decided to allocate water to irrigate 5 lakh acres under the SRSP Stage II. This comprehensive plan aims to ensure adequate irrigation support for the upcoming Rabi season, leveraging the improved water storage conditions to benefit farmers across the region.

Breakdown of irrigation support

Major Irrigation Projects: 30 lakh acres

Medium Irrigation Projects: 2.9 lakh acres

Minor Irrigation Projects: 7.2 lakh acres

Lift Scheme of the IDC: 1 lakh acres
