Peddapalli: More than 4,000 birds in a poultry farm in Kalwasrirampur mandal died within a span of 48 hours on Sunday and Monday.
Dasari Swamy, a sarpanch of Peddampet of Kalwasriramur mandal, set up a poultry farm in five acre in the mandal headquarters at a cost of Rs 5.5 lakh. He brought 4,600 chicks from Tamil Nadu in September last. The birds took ill all of a sudden and died. As news spread across the mandal, panic gripped the locals since they apprehended that bird flu, which had spread in some states, had surfaced in the mandal.
On coming to know about the death of birds on such a large scale, veterinary doctor Dr Suresh visited the farm to take stock of the situation. After conducting a medical examination, he declared that the chicks died due to Ranikhet disease.
Swamy sought the help of the State government since he had suffered a loss of Rs 20 to Rs 22 lakh. All the dead birds were buried in a huge pit in the poultry farm premises.
