Hyderabad: Telangana State men and women’s basketball teams qualified for the National Championship, scheduled to be held in Chennai from December 23 to January 30, after their impressive performance in the 71st National South Zone Basketball Championship in Chennai.

Telangana women remained unbeaten in the ongoing South Zone tournament to clinch the title and make it to the National Championship while the men’s team won two matches to qualify as the fourth placed team.

In the final league match on Friday, the women’s team trounced Karnataka 66-43 after leading comfortably 36-13 at the half time. Earlier in the tournament, they defeated Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the men’s team needed to win the match against Puducherry to qualify. They took a commanding 47-19 lead at the lemon break before finishing the match 65-44. Earlier, they defeated Andhra Pradesh, before losing to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
