Hyderabad: Telangana has registered an improvement in its Performance Grading Index (PGI) in the field of School Education.

For the year 2019-20, the State’s overall PGI score was 772 points as compared to 757 in 2018-19. Telangana figures among nine States/UTs that have improved their PGI scores by 0.1 per cent to 5 per cent for 2019-20, and was categorised under Grade-II (751-800) which was the same for 2018-19.

The PGI scores for 2019-20 were approved by the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Sunday. The scores were given based on two categories – learning outcomes and governance, and management.

For 2019-20, Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala have occupied level II (score 901-950) i.e., Grade I++, while Ladakh was in Grade VII with a score range of 0-550. None of the States/UTs achieved Level I (951-1,000).

Going by domain wise performance, in Learning Outcome and Quality, Telangana scored 142 points from a maximum score of 180 points and in the Access category, the State scored 69 out of a maximum score of 80. The State scored 66 in the Access category in 2018-19.

Likewise, in the infrastructure and facilities category, Telangana scored 113 out of 150 points for 2019-20 while it was 92 in 2018-19. In the case of equity and governance process categories, the State score was 210 and 238 out of 230 and 360 points, respectively.

The PGI was introduced by the Union government with a set of 70 parameters to catalyse transformational change in the field of School Education. It was first published for 2017-18 in the year 2019. The scores were based on 70 indicators in aggregate with a total weightage of 1,000 points. Each of the 70 indicators had assigned weightage of either 10 or 20 points.

According to the Union Education Ministry, the information on the indicators was drawn from data available from the Unified District Information System for Education Plus, National Achievement Survey of National Council of Educational Research and Training, Mid-Day Meal website, Public Financial Management System and the Shagun portal.
