Rajanna-Sircilla: Unable to cope with rising medical expenses, a cancer patient from Yellareddypet mandal died by suicide after consuming a large number of folic acid tablets.
Pilli Manasa (38), a resident of Dumala village, had been battling bone cancer and had reportedly spent significant amounts on treatment. The family’s financial distress worsened after they were forced to borrow money for the treatment of their younger son, Sridhar, who was diagnosed with pneumonia three months ago.
Depressed over the mounting expenses and the family’s poor financial condition, Manasa took the extreme step on July 26 by swallowing 30 folic acid tablets. Her son Sridhar, who witnessed her taking the tablets, immediately informed his father.
She was rushed to the government hospital in Sircilla. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to a private hospital in Yellareddypet, where she died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday.
