Telangana CEO informs ECI about Khairatabad Assembly seat vacancy

The Telangana Chief Electoral Officer has informed the Election Commission of India about the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacancy following Danam Nagender’s disqualification. The Assembly notified the vacancy from April 23, 2024, while the ECI is yet to announce the byelection schedule.

Hyderabad: Following the High Court judgment disqualifying former MLA Danam Nagender, the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) informed the Election Commission of India (ECI) about the vacancy of the Khairatabad Assembly constituency seat.

Earlier, the Legislative Assembly had also issued a gazette notification stating that the Khairatabad Assembly constituency seat fell vacant from April 23, 2024. Following the release of the gazette notification, the Telangana CEO wrote a letter to the ECI on Monday, informing it about the seat vacancy.

“The ECI will take a decision on when to hold the byelection, which may be held along with general elections in Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab in February 2027. Meanwhile, the SIR exercise will be completed and the final electoral roll will be published on November 9,” sources said.

The byelection to the Khairatabad Assembly constituency has become inevitable after the High Court on September 18 disqualified Danam Nagender for contesting the Secunderabad Lok Sabha election as a Congress candidate while continuing as a BRS MLA. The court held that his disqualification would take effect from April 23, 2024, the day he filed his nomination as a Congress candidate.
