Telangana Cyber Security Bureau alerts public on rising APK scams
Shikha Goel, Director of TGSCB, revealed that fraudsters were distributing APK files via fake links to ‘PM-KISAN’ and ‘PM YOJANA’ apps on WhatsApp. Clicking these links prompts the download of an application that hacks the phone, potentially leading to financial losses.

Hyderabad: With the cases of Android Package Kit (APK) scams trending in the State, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGSCB), have cautioned the people against these cyber threats.
Shikha Goel, Director, TGSCB said the fraudsters were sending the APK files through fake links of ‘PM- KISAN’ and ‘PM YOJANA’ apps on WhatsApp. When the receiver clicks the link, an application gets downloaded, hacking the phone and potentially causing a financial loss.
“People should avoid clicking on such links and sharing them on social media or WhatsApp. The official website and verified sources for downloading applications related to government schemes should be used,” she said.
People were advised to never download APKs from unknown sources and use official app stores like Google playstore or trusted websites. First verify the authenticity of any app by checking reviews, permissions, and publisher details before downloading. “People should also avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via SMS, email, or messaging apps,” Shikha Goel said.
In case, the mobile phone users suspect fraud, they should uninstall the suspicious app immediately, change passwords for any accounts that may have been compromised.
The police asked people to report such incidents to the 1930 helpline or visit ‘cybercrime.gov.in.’
