Telangana DCA busts fake nutraceutical racket in Hyderabad
The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) seized Gabazen tablets in Malakpet that were falsely marketed as nutraceuticals. Manufactured by Gothic Pharmaceuticals and marketed by Sifco Ayustar, the product contained gabapentin, a Schedule H drug requiring a licence.
Hyderabad: Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana during raids in Malakpet, detected Gabazen tablets being falsely manufactured and sold under the guise of a ‘food product/nutraceutical’.
The product was found to have been manufactured by Gothic Pharmaceuticals, Cherlapally IDA, and marketed by Sifco Ayustar, Hyderabad, the DCA said in a statement.
Gabapentin is a prescription drug classified under Schedule H of the Drugs Rules and is not a nutraceutical. It needs to be manufactured under a drug licence, adhere to GMP norms and meet quality standards prescribed.
The drugs that are falsely manufactured and sold under a food license are not produced in accordance with GMPs and often fail to meet the quality standards prescribed. Such products pose serious risks to patients’ health and may have severe implications, the DCA clarified.
