Hyderabad: The State government on Saturday designated Gandhi Hospital and ENT Hospital in King Koti for providing free treatment to Covid recovered patients who have developed black fungus or mucormycosis.
“We have shared detailed guidelines on precautions against the black fungus that hospitals and caregivers have to take while they treat Covid positive patients. The guidelines have been sent to all private and government hospitals in the State,” he said.
Mucormycosis fungal infection commonly occurs among individuals who have recently undergone organ transplant and have compromised immunity. Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes also are at higher risk. “The ailment is not something new and has been there for a long time. It’s just that we are witnessing the ailment frequently among patients who have recovered from Covid. Due to overuse of steroids, patients get infected by black fungus,” Dr Rao said.
