Hyderabad: The Telangana Express, one of the most familiar long-distance trains for passengers from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh travelling to Delhi, has completed five decades of service.

The train began operations on October 3, 1976, as the Andhra Pradesh Express. It was inaugurated by then union Railway Minister Madhu Dandavate and the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Jalagam Vengala Rao.

Before the Rajdhani Express became a major option for Delhi-bound passengers, the Andhra Pradesh Express was regarded as a fast and relatively luxurious connection between the Telugu-speaking region and the national capital.

When introduced, the train had only Kazipet as a halt and operated with 14 coaches hauled by a diesel locomotive. Rising passenger demand led to its expansion, with twin diesel locomotives and 21 coaches being introduced by 1981. Over the years, additional stoppages were provided at Ramagundam, Mancherial and Bellampalli.

The train has undergone a major technological transformation. From its early diesel-powered days, it now operates with an electric locomotive and a 24-coach rake. The journey covering around 1,677 km currently takes about 26 hours and 30 minutes, with 16 stoppages.

The train’s identity changed after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Following demands to reflect Telangana’s separate identity, the Andhra Pradesh Express was officially renamed the Telangana Express in 2015.

Five decades later, the train continues to be an important rail link between Hyderabad and Delhi, carrying thousands of passengers across the country.
