Hyderabad: The first government-run general residential polytechnic is set to come up in the forthcoming academic year. The Higher Education Department decided to commence the college for both boys and girls in Kesamudram mandal of Mahabubabad district. An order to this effect was recently issued by Education Department Secretary Dr Yogita Rana.

Separate residential complexes, and academic and administrative blocks will be constructed, along with separate residential facilities for both girls and boys. For this, the department sanctioned Rs 70.55 crore.

As per the order, the new college will offer six engineering diploma programmes – artificial intelligence and machine learning, embedded systems, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering with EV specialisation, mining engineering and computer science and engineering. Each of the programmes will offer a total of 60 seats.

Sanctioning a total of 94 teaching and non-teaching positions in the college, the department said an order on sanction of posts would be issued by the Finance Department separately.

Currently, there are no government-run general residential polytechnics. However, four government model residential polytechnic colleges are operational, each serving specific communities. For instance, Government Polytechnic Karimnagar is designated for girls from SC community, while the one in Gajwel is for SC boys. Government polytechnics in Utnoor and Manuguru cater to ST boys.

The model residential polytechnics reserve 75 per cent of its seats to students from the designated community and remaining seats are open to students from other communities. However, the upcoming college in Kesamudram will admit students from all social groups following the existing rule of reservation.

In addition to the new college, Government Polytechnic College Patancheru in Sangareddy district will commence its operation from the forthcoming academic year. Although the college was sanctioned in 2023, it could not commence operations due to delay in receiving nod from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and not going in for admissions during the academic year 2024-25.

The new college will offer engineering diploma programmes in CSE, ECE and EEE. The department sanctioned 52 teaching and non-teaching posts. “We have received necessary approvals from AICTE to commence both the colleges from academic year 2025-26. As for faculty, we will be adjusting the existing staff to new institutions and take up recruitment later. At present, there are some colleges with limited hostel facilities and model residential polytechnics but not the government residential polytechnic, which is now coming up in Kesamudram mandal,” said a senior official.
