Nirmal: A fisherman was swept away in the flooding Kaddam River following the release of surplus water from the Kaddam Narayana Reddy project on Saturday.
Locals said Gangadhar of Kannapur village was washed away in the river’s strong current. He was stranded on a rock for quite some time, seeking help, before attempting to swim across. However, he was dragged away by the current, a moment captured in a video clip that went viral on social media.
By the time the DDRF personnel reached the spot, Gangadhar had already been swept away. Locals opined that he might have survived if the team had arrived earlier. His body had not been traced till evening. Onlookers recorded the incident but failed to alert the police, which resulted in a delay in rescue efforts.
Gangadhar had gone fishing in the river despite irrigation officials issuing warnings against venturing into the water in view of heavy discharge from the project.
