Hyderabad: In a major relief to the families of farmers who committed suicide, the State government released Rs 7.95 crore providing an ex-gratia of Rs 6 lakh each to 133 bereaved families.

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar issued orders to this effect and directed the District Collectors to distribute the amount to the farmers’ families.

Over a period of four years between 2014 and 2018, around 1,600 farmers committed suicide due to failure of agriculture and crop damages that incurred them severe losses. The same was ascertained by the revenue, police and agriculture officials. Accordingly, the State government responded and paid compensation to more than 1,450 families of the deceased farmers in a phased manner. The latest tranche of funds were the last part of the compensation amount.

Though a few other farmers committed suicide after 2018 due to distress, they were all covered under the Rythu Bima scheme where each family received a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. The State government has been implementing the Rythu Bandhu scheme for all the farmers since 2018, providing compensation of Rs 5 lakh each notwithstanding the cause of death.

More than 70,000 families benefited from the Rythu Bima scheme since its inception in 2018. Till date, Rs 3,502 crore insurance amount was paid by LIC to the bereaved families of farmers.
