Hyderabad: The State government may enhance the superannuation age of regular teachers working in State universities. Accordingly, it has started the process as to how much increase in the retirement age should be given to teachers.

The present retirement age of teachers in State universities is 60 years. The government is exploring various options, including enhancing the retirement age by one year to 61 years, which will make it on par with State government employees. Another option before the government is to increase the superannuation age by three years and five years.

Presently, 942 teachers are working in various positions in 11 universities, which come under the purview of the Education Department. If the retirement age is enhanced by one year, it will benefit 34 senior-most teachers. Similarly, if it is increased by three years and five years, a total of 62 and 141 teachers will be benefited respectively.

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, the superannuation age of the universities teachers is 65 years and it is being followed in centrally funded higher and technical educational institutions in the country. In fact, teacher unions of State universities have been urging the State government to enhance the retirement age as per the UGC rules.

“We want the government to increase the superannuation age to 65 years. Enhancing the retirement age will help the universities retain senior-most professors besides it will help in carrying out research work,” Osmania University Teachers Association president Prof B Manohar said.

According to the sources in the Higher Education Department, the government might take a decision on the increase of superannuation age of the universities teachers in the next Cabinet meeting which will be held soon. Earlier, the government enhanced the superannuation age of employees and teachers from 58 years to 61 years which came into force on March 30, 2021.
