Hyderabad: Telangana government on Thursday approved the proposals of the Irrigation Department to supply irrigation water to 34.27 lakh acres during the ongoing Yasangi season, as against 39 lakh acres for the corresponding season last year. The decision was taken to discourage paddy cultivation during Yasangi in the wake of the Centre’s refusal to purchase rice from the State.
In all, the Irrigation officials proposed to provide irrigation water to about 22.32 lakh acres for cultivation of irrigated dry crops and another 11.95 lakh acres for growing wet crops. About 296.39 TMC of water will be required for irrigating the Yasangi crops.
Due to heavy rains in the State this year, majority of the water bodies including reservoirs and irrigation projects are brimming with water. However, the Irrigation department officials have decided to reduce the water supplies in order to discourage the wet crops especially paddy which consume water in a large quantity. A project-wise plan for project management will be communicated to the respective authorities in this regard.
