Nalgonda: Extraction of ground water in Nalgonda district was more than annual recharge, which was an alarming trend, if it continued to increase.

According to a report on dynamic ground water resources of Nalgonda district 2019-20 brought out by Ground Water Department, the mandal wise status of ground water extraction varies from 17 per cent (Damaracherla) to 107 per cent of recharged water (Kattangur).


Chandampet, Chinthapally, Chityal, Devarakonda, Gudipally, Kanagal, Kattamgur, Marriguda, Nakrekal, Nalgonda and Neredugumma mandals fallen under category of very high ground water usage areas, which means extraction of above 70 per cent of recharged ground water.

Chandur, Kondamallepally, Munugode, Nampalli, Narketpally, Shaligowraram, Thiparthi and Vemulapally mandals fallen under high ground water usage areas, which means extraction of 50 per cent to 70 per cent of ground water.

Anumula, Gurrampode, Kethepalli, Mandgulapalli, PA Pally and Peddavura mandals comes under category of low ground water usage ie extraction of less than 30 per cent of ground water.

Out of 31 mandals in the district, one district falls in over exploited of ground water, 10 mandals falls in semi-critical and. remaining 20 mandals falls in safe category.

Ground water extraction for agriculture purpose was dominating the other purposes of use of ground water in the district. Then Net annual available groundwater extractable resources in the district was 1151 Million Cubic Meters (MCM).

Current gross ground water extraction for irrigation was 450 MCM including 269 MCM in command areas and 180 MCM in non-command areas. Gross ground water extraction for domestic and industrial needs was 91 MCM including 53 MCM in command area and 38 in non-command areas.

The depths of the water levels observed during pre-monsoon season are between 2.84 -27.3 m while it was between 0.77-23.56 m during post monsoon season.

The geological environment, climate and drainage have profound influence on the ground water quality in the district. Contaminations from various sources including the agro-chemicals is causing lot of harm and damaged to ground water system.

Higher values of TDS are mostly found in localized areas only in Kethepally, Kattangur, Nakrekal and Vemulapally mandals while excess fluoride present in ground water in Marriguda, Nampalli and Chinthapally mandals. Nitrate and chloride contents were also found in considerable level in ground waters in all mandals in the district.
