Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Tuesday reserved orders in two separate criminal petitions filed to quash FIRs against officials of the AP Mahesh Cooperative Urban Bank. The criminal complaints were filed by the AP Mahesh Cooperative Urban Bank Shareholders Welfare Association through its Secretary Shyam Sunder Biyani before the Metropolitan Magistrate at Hyderabad.
The allegations ranged from illegal disbursement of loans to irregularities in the election conducted for the executive posts of the bank. The issues raised in the complaint are also being adjudicated by the court in a writ petition filed by the same complainant and the court had, through an interim order, directed the release of the election results.
The petitioner’s counsel stated that there has been an abuse in the process of law followed by the police in registering these FIRs as the same averments are also being heard by the court.
Final hearing in food ripening matter
A two-judge panel, comprising of Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy, directed that all matters pertaining to chemicals used for post ripening purposes shall be heard collectively. A public interest litigation was filed by Nalin Venkat Kishore Kumar to declare the use of ethephon, an insecticide, as an organophosphorus chemical.
An organophosphorus chemical is also a corrosive acid. In fruit ripening processes, it leads to depositing of and touching of ethephon directly on the harvested fruits. Senior Counsel S Niranjan Reddy was appointed as amicus curiae in this matter and the pleadings have been completed. Senior counsel S Ravi contended that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India conducted tests and it was concluded that ethephon was safe to use for ripening. The matter was posted to June 14 for final hearing.
