Hyderabad: A two-judge panel of Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy on Monday closed a writ appeal filed by Sridhar Reddy, father of a victim, challenging an order permitting the release of a movie made by Ram Gopal Varma on the sexual assault and murder of his daughter, and stayed the release of the movie for a period of two weeks.
Counsel for the filmmaker submitted that the Censor Board had approved the release of the movie with an instruction to change the title from ‘Disha encounter’ to ‘Asha encounter’. The panel on being informed that the movie was to release on OTT platforms directed the respondent to withhold its release for two weeks and granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the authorities with their objections. The panel, however, stated that it has not looked into either the merit of the application or the subsequent appeal filed.
Home Dept told to file counter
Justice K Lakshman of Telangana High Court directed Home Department to file counter in a writ petition filed by Kota Konda Pitchaiah. The petitioner alleged that a bag containing gold ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh belonging to his mother was seized by Sanathnagar Police for verification purpose without giving him any receipt of such seizure.
He was told that he can collect the same after receiving a call from the Commissioner’s office. The petitioner complained that he never received any such call. He then went to the Sanathnagar Police Station to collect the same where he was ridiculed and treated badly. The police even allegedly denied any such seizure. He later made a complaint to Commissioner of Police, but no action was forthcoming. The judge while viewing the matter seriously asked the Home Department and police to file a counter explaining the occurrence in detail by June 23.
Writ petition adjourned
Justice K Lakshman adjourned a writ petition pertaining to a complaint made by GMR Hyderabad International Airport to be heard with similar matters on June 29. The GMR Hyderabad International Airport had filed a writ petition seeking directions to police authorities to take effective measures for curbing public nuisance and menace of touting activities and passenger harassment by cab drivers in the airport premises.
It is alleged that the representations made in the said case to the police station concerned were not looked into. The judge on April 29 directed the police concerned to consider the representations and to take action according to law. However, the petitioner alleged that the police did not comply with the directions till date.
