Hyderabad: The State Budget 2022-23 presented by Finance Minister T Harish Rao on Monday has sought to ensure there is substantial increase in investments aimed at expansion and improvement of vital healthcare services and medical infrastructure across Telangana.

Among the big ticket announcements related to health, medical and family welfare, the decision to green light new medical colleges in all the districts could turn out to be very significant, especially in the backdrop of the ongoing crisis of severe shortage of medical seats in government sector, which forces aspirants pursue medical courses in foreign universities.

In the ‘Telangana Socioeconomic Outlook-2022’, the Telangana government maintained that despite the pandemic, the health ecosystem has remained resilient and ensured that there is minimum loss of life.

“Going forward, the government would continue to strive to provide high-quality healthcare services to all as envisioned in the Sustainable Development Goals and would work towards eradicating diseases, and strengthening the health system in the State, with a special focus on personnel development and addressing new and emerging health challenges,” it said.

Apart from medical colleges, the Budget also proposed to establish four multi-speciality hospitals in four corners of Hyderabad including Gachibowli, LB Nagar, Alwal and Erragadda, in addition to enhancing bed strength at NIMS by another 2,000 beds.

The decision to establish a Health City in Warangal that will include a hospital and medical college with a cost of Rs 1,100 crore and add another 2,000 beds, is expected to boost the efforts to provide super-speciality care in districts.

Another initiative that could generate lot of social impact and goodwill is the decision to introduce ‘KCR Nutrition Kit’ exclusively for lactating and pregnant women who are anaemic. For girl students, the government has also decided to procure health and hygiene kits, which will go a long way in encouraging personal hygiene among young school girls.

In the Budget, Harish Rao, who also is the Health Minister, ensured that sufficient budgetary allocation is available to upgrade existing medical infrastructure across all the major teaching hospitals, not only in Hyderabad but across Telangana.
