Hyderabad: The Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) has issued a stern warning to private medical and dental colleges in Telangana regarding illegal collection of tuition fees.

The University clarified that the total course fee for MBBS and BDS programmes must be calculated for four-and-half-years only, even though it is collected in five annual installments.

The Health Varsity made it clear that private medical and dental colleges must not collect fees in advance or charge additional amounts from students who are detained or fail an academic year.

The University also warned of ‘stringent action’, including cancellation of affiliation, for any institution found harassing students or deviating from these government-mandated guidelines.

The Health Varsity directive follows numerous complaints from students and parents, particularly those admitted under the Management Quota, alleging that several institutions are forcing them to pay for five full years.

The University termed such misinterpretations of government orders as improper and a source of undue hardship and mental stress for students.

According to an official communication, the fee structure fixed by the Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) for the 2023-2026 block period stipulates that the total cost for the 9-semester course must be divided into five equal installments to reduce the financial burden on families.

For instance, if an annual fee of Rs 14.50 lakh is fixed, the total course fee should be Rs 65.25 lakh (for 4.5 years), payable in yearly installments of Rs 13.05 lakh.
