Hyderabad: The Telangana Independent Hijra Association has alleged extortion and illegal activities by cross-dressers in the city and demanded police action.
Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, association president Laila said there were several incidents where cross-dressers posing as transgender persons were threatening and extorting people in areas including Madhapur, Hitec City, Kukatpally and other places in the city.
“Due to illegal activities of such pseudo transgender groups, genuine transgender persons are being harassed,” Laila said. Association general secretary Chandramukhi said several men were dressing up like transgender persons during the night and resorting to theft, robbery, assault and other crimes.
“This is often leading to police cases against genuine transgender persons. Though there are some educated and working professionals within the community, there are many who strive for work and food. The government should take care of them,” Chandramukhi said, also requesting the police to free them from false cases.
The association also requested the government and the police to identify such cross-dressers resorting to crimes and to ensure punishment. A few members also alleged that one transgender person was running a mafia along with a group of transgender persons and resorting to illegal activities in the Kukatpally area.
