Warangal: In a strange development in Warangal East constituency, a corporator of the ruling Congress party has been detained by the Mills Colony police, allegedly at the behest of the local MLA and her husband.

Usually leaders and cadres of opposition parties are harassed by the ruling party but in Warangal East, Congress leaders are targeting their political rivals within the party. The 66-year-old corporator Gundeti Narender of 20th division of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation was accused of attempted rape and committing atrocities against SC/STs.

He was taken into custody on Sunday based on the complaint of a Congress worker N Lavanya. Narender’s arrest was condemned by party district president Errabelli Swarna, MLC Baswaraju Saraiah, BRS leader Nannapuneni Narender, BJP leader Errabelli Pradeep Rao and others.

Congress leaders Saraiah and Swarna stated that Gundeti Narender was a committed Congress worker who got elected as corporator three times and it is not correct to book false cases as well as to detain him without verifying the facts.

The leaders informed the media that the matter would be taken to the notice of the party high command. Some cadres claiming themselves to be the henchmen of ministers and MLAs have been resorting to harass their rivals. Action would be taken against such persons, they added.

Former BRS MLA Narender alleged that atrocities on opposition workers as well was increasing day by day in Warangal East constituency. Police should bring out the secret behind the complaint by a woman against her own party corporator Gundeti Narender, he said.

“Narender is known to be a person who lives by values. The woman who filed the case against the corporator might be instigated by Minister Konda Surekha. A thorough investigation should be conducted into the case,” he demanded.

The police have not registered an FIR in connection with the case and the corporator, accused in rape attempt and committing atrocities against SC/STs, was let off on station bail.
