Hyderabad: The Central government has appreciated Telangana stating that it was National Lead State being the first to achieve the target of mandatory 100 per cent audit of Gram Panchayats for the audit period 2020-21. Last year too, Telangana topped the States in online auditing of gram panchayats.

On Thursday, Ministry of Panchayat Raj Joint Secretary KS Sethi, in a letter to State governments, said as the National Lead State, Telangana had completed the audit for 100 per cent Gram Panchayats for the period 2020-21.

Telangana is the only State in the country which successfully completed 100 per cent online auditing of 12,769 Gram Panchayats, he said. Telangana was also in the process of completing audit of Zilla Parishads and Block Panchayats, followed by Tamil Nadu (72 per cent GPs), Andhra Pradesh (60 per cent GPs) and Odisha (59 per cent GPs). Many States are yet to commence the audit activities for Panchayat Raj Institutes, he Sethi pointed out.
In 2019-20 financial year, the Central government, to ensure transparency and accountability, had introduced the online audit of Gram Panchayats. The move also facilitates curbing misuse of funds in local bodies.

The XV Finance Commission grants for the period 2020-21 were provided to the remaining tiers of Panchayats, including Zilla Parishads, Block Panchayats and traditional Local Bodies under the Sixth Schedule areas, auditing their accounts becomes essential, he said in the letter.
