Warangal: An internationally renowned micro-sculptor from Warangal, Ajay Kumar Mattewada has come up with yet another miniature wonder commemorating Ganesh Chathurthi, which falls on August 27.
He created a micro sculpture of Lord Ganesha in dancing posture on the tip of an eyelash. The sculpture measures just 0.37 mm (370 microns) in height and is completely invisible to the naked eye and one needs a microscope to see it in detail.
Ajay Kumar, who has earned worldwide recognition as a rare and unique artist, has a practice of creating extraordinary miniature sculptures to mark special occasions for the past several years. He is renowned for carving sculptures inside the eye of a needle, on the tip of an eyelash, on strands of human hair and even on the head of a pin.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Ajay Kumar said he used specially made soft wax, grains of sand, plastic powder, micro tools he specially crafted and a caterpillar hair as a brush for painting. The artwork took around 120 hours spread over two months to complete.
He explained that each piece of miniature art work demands months of effort. While carving a micro sculpture he has to hold his breath and control heartbeat to avoid even the slightest movement of his body which might ruin the artwork.
Ajay Kumar is known for sculpting with rare materials such as gold, ivory, matchsticks, handmade wax, plastic and nylon particles.
His micro art works have been admired by former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as well as the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several other national and international dignitaries.
He has also achieved five world and national records in the Limca Book of Records besides receiving international and national awards. His works have been showcased at World Art Dubai-2024 and received critical acclaim.
Ajay Kumar created a miniature statue of “Christ the Redeemer”, one of the Seven Wonders of the World located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in December 2024 on the occasion of Christmas. The micro art 1.1 mm in height stood in the eye of a needle.
