Telangana Model School teachers wait weeks for salaries
Telangana Model School teachers are still waiting for timely salaries, despite Congress’s pre-poll promise to pay all government employees on the first of every month. The delay is affecting their credit scores, EMI payments, and access to basic service benefits
Hyderabad: One of Congress’s pre-election assurances was to have salaries to all government employees, including teachers, paid on the first day of the month. However, for thousands of the Telangana Model Schools’ teachers, the assurance proved to be hollow.
Every month, teachers are being forced to wait for their salaries as there is no fixed date for payment, with it being credited on the 10th, 15th and in some cases as late as the 20th of a month.
With a delay in crediting salaries and no fixed date, the Credit Information Bureau India Limited (CIBIL) scores of the staff who have taken various loans have been adversely affected, besides paying a penalty for cheque bounce and rescheduling EMIs.
The Model Schools’ regular teachers, on the lines of regular staff working under the School Education department, have been demanding payment of salaries from the 010 head account (treasury account). Presently, the 3,000 regular staff in 194 Model Schools receive their salaries from 311/312 accounts.
“The Congress government assured to pay our salaries on the first day of the month. So far, we have never received salaries on time. In fact, we get salaries in the second or third week of the month and there is no fixed date,” said Bhootham Yakamallu, president, Telangana Model Schools Teachers’ Association.
Further, teachers complained that despite being regular employees, who had been appointed via a proper recruitment notification in 2013, there is no death gratuity. So far, 40 in-service teachers have passed away.
“Though we come under the Contributory Pension Scheme, the government did not extend the death gratuity. We are not getting any sort of benefits despite being recruited as regular teachers, unlike the government school teachers,” a teacher said.
