Hyderabad: The State government has started preparing ground to roll-out Covid-19 vaccines for adolescents aged between 15 years and 18 years and booster vaccine doses for senior citizens, even as measures are underway to further intensify efforts to cover eligible individuals in Telangana who are yet to receive the second dose.

To administer vaccines to youngsters between 15 years and 18 years and booster doses to senior citizens in Telangana, a total of 70 lakh doses of Covid vaccines will be needed. There are 22.78 lakh youngsters in the age group of 15 – 18 years, about 41.60 lakh senior citizens and 6.34 lakh health care workers, according to estimates from the State health department.

“To cover all these age groups, Telangana will need 70 lakh doses of Covid vaccines. Along with administering booster doses, we will ensure to cover all eligible persons who are yet to get the second dose,” State Health Minister, T Harish Rao in a review meeting on Covid vaccination and Omicron preparedness with senior health officials on Monday, said.

At present, 99.46 percent of eligible individuals in Telangana have received first dose of Covid vaccine while the coverage of second dose of Covid vaccine is 64 percent.

“In view of the impending threat of Omicron, all eligible individuals must get vaccinated at the earliest. In the last one-year, we have taken enough measures to strengthen medical infrastructure for future waves and if needed we will add more medical infrastructure. I urge people of Telangana to ensure they follow Covid appropriate behaviour and all the eligible persons to get vaccinated at the earliest,” Harish Rao said.
