Dubai: The Indian community in Qatar is witnessing hectic activity for the last two days as elections for three apex organisations, working under the aegis of the Indian Embassy in Qatar, are scheduled to be held on Friday.

The Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) and Indian Sports Centre (ISC) are the three primer umbrella organisations of NRIs in Qatar that play vital roles in community affairs in the gas rich kingdom.


The position among the management committee of any of these three organisations is considered a coveted one for some NRIs.

For the first time, this year there are three prominent faces from Telangana in the poll fray, garnering attention from the community. Praveen Kumar Buyyani of Nizamabad and Khaja Nizamuddin of Karimnagar are running for positions in ICBF while Nandini Abbagoni from Medchal district is facing tough competition to be elected in the ICC.

Praveen and Nizamuddin are both known to be available round the clock for the community especially for the blue-collar workforce from the State while Nandini is known for the annual Bathukamma festival to present the vibrant Telangana culture in Qatar.

Interestingly, the Telangana trio has strategic support from the Malayali community, which is a deciding factor in the election, owing to the community’s numerical strength. The Indian diaspora in Qatar with a robust presence of over half a century has established itself across various sectors, from high-skilled professions to vital blue-collar roles.
