Hyderabad: For a couple from Telangana’s Suryapet district, thousands of kilometres could not keep them from being part of their daughter’s wedding. Unable to travel to the US, they joined the ceremony virtually and took part in the traditional rituals through a livestream.

Their only daughter, Himabindu, who is based in the US, married Rohith Kumar, a native of NTR district, on Friday night. The two met while living in the US, fell in love and eventually decided to get married.

However, Himabindu’s parents, Jayaraju and Jyothi, could not be at the wedding venue in person. Instead, they watched the ceremony online and participated in the celebrations from Telangana.

During the wedding rituals, the couple picked up akshintalu, the sacred rice traditionally used to bless newlyweds, and showered it towards the screen as Himabindu and Rohith exchanged their vows.

The virtual ritual allowed the parents to perform an important part of their daughter’s wedding despite being far away.

For Himabindu, having her parents join the ceremony meant their blessings were still part of the occasion. For Jayaraju and Jyothi, the livestream gave them an opportunity to witness their only daughter’s wedding and take part in a tradition they would otherwise have missed.

The wedding is another example of how technology is helping families remain part of important milestones despite geographical distance. While a virtual connection cannot replace being there in person, it allowed the parents to share a significant moment with their daughter.
