Hyderabad: With traffic congestion mounting across western parts of the city, reportedly due to the TGSRTC buses halting on roadsides, the State government and RTC are planning a massive integrated bus terminal at Jeedimetla on the lines of the city’s main Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station.

The government has reportedly allocated around 100 acres for the project, which is being planned as a multipurpose transport hub with separate terminals for interstate and city buses, an electric bus depot, a large charging station, and a multi-level parking facility.

As per information available, the project is aimed at easing traffic congestion in rapidly growing areas such as Kukatpally, KPHB, BHEL, Lingampally, Bachupally, Gandimaisamma, and Gajularamaram, where hundreds of buses currently stop on roads to pick up passengers.

Also, interstate services from Maharashtra and Karnataka, along with buses from the Medak region, are also halting on busy roads, worsening traffic snarls.

As part of the proposed plan, long-distance buses may be halted at Jeedimetla itself in future to reduce the entry of heavy bus traffic into the city. It is learnt that around 30 acres have been identified for the interstate bus terminal, while another 20 acres are proposed for a dedicated city bus terminal.

The project is also expected to address operational issues faced by RTC staff. At present, nearly 60 buses reportedly halt overnight near Jagadgirigutta due to the lack of proper parking space, forcing buses to be stationed on roadsides.

With the State transport corporation preparing to expand its electric bus fleet under the Centre’s PM e-Drive scheme, a large electric bus depot is also being planned at the site.

Telangana RTC has already been allotted 2,000 electric buses under the scheme. A bus depot and EV charging station are also being planned to support both city and interstate electric bus operations, apart from an underground multi-level parking yard at the terminal to handle the daily passenger inflow.
