Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy said the State government has set a target of scaling up its godown capacity to one crore tonnes in the next a couple of years. The officials have already identified necessary lands across the State and have been instructed them to allocate to the departments concerned to take up the construction work.

Participating in the 15th board meeting of Telangana State Warehousing Corporation here on Wednesday, Niranjan Reddy said at the time of State formation, Telangana had godowns with a storage capacity of only four lakh tonnes. Over the last seven years, the government had enhanced its storage capacity to 25.4 lakh tonnes and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had already directed the officials to construct warehouses with another 40 lakh tonnes capacity.

“The State currently has warehousess with 65.40 lakh tonnes capacity including all types of warehouses. Telangana State Warehousing Corporation has warehouses with a capacity of 2.93 lakh tonnes where all these warehouses are running with a 102 percent capacity,” the Minister said.

He said with increased irrigation facilities and the government’s support to the agriculture sector, the farm operations as well as productions have increased significantly. As a result, farmers are forced to store their produce in Rythu Vedikas, mills and other places.

The Corporation chairman Mandula Samuel, managing director G Jithender Reddy, directors RR Agarwal, Ajay Jadoo, Muthuraman and others also attended the meeting.
