Suryapet: The 16th gate of Pulichinthala Project was washed away at 3.15 am while the engineers were trying to operate it.

As the inflow to the project increased to over one lakh cusecs, the engineers of the project decided to operate 16th gate also. While operating, 16th gate got washed away.

After the incident, the officials swung into action and took up fixing the stop lock gate in place of the washed away gate.

According to the officials, fixing of the emergency gate would be completed by Thursday noon. The high pressure on the gate resulted in the washing away of 16th gate.

The inflow to the project was recorded as 1.10 lakh cusecs while outflow was two lakh cusecs.

Officials issue alert

Keeping in mind the situation, Krishna district (AP) Collector J Nivas altered the people of the villages along the Krishna river saying there was a chance of sudden increase in flow of water. The project officials may reduce the level of water by releasing more water to avoid pressure on the gates while fixing the stop lock gate. People should not try to cross the streams in the drown stream area of Pulichinthala project.

Stating that Prakasham Barrage would witness flash flood within eight hours, he said that the inflow to the barriage would increase four to five lakh cusecs.
