Hyderabad: The State has witnessed an exceptionally wet monsoon season this year, with rainfall recorded at 34 per cent above normal levels. The State has received a cumulative rainfall of 898.1mm from June 1 to September 17, compared to the normal 668.6 mm for this period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the Southwest monsoon, which typically retreats from the Northwest by September 17, may extend its stay briefly due to the development of another low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal later this month.

This could lead to continued rainfall in Telangana and other parts of South India until late September. Several districts in Telangana have experienced significant deviations from normal rainfall levels. The districts of Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba Gadwal and Nagarkurnool have seen large excesses in rainfall, with deviations ranging from 78 per cent to 102 per cent.

The districts of Kamareddy, Hanumakonda, Yadadri Bhongir, Jangaon, Kumuram Bheem, Adilabad, and Mancherial received normal rainfall while the remaining 21 districts experienced excess rainfall ranging from 20 per cent to 59 per cent.

The heavy rains have led to catastrophic deluges and flooding in parts of Telangana, causing significant disruptions and damage. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area recorded 693.6 mm of rainfall, a 27 per cent deviation from the normal 547.8 mm.

Meteorologists predict that the monsoon withdrawal process, which begins from Western Rajasthan, will bring an end to the four months of seasonal rains by mid-October. However, the development of low-pressure systems could cause deviations from this timeline.

With the monsoon season extending beyond its usual period, Telangana continues to brace for more rainfall. Authorities are on high alert to manage the potential impacts of prolonged rains and ensure the safety of people in the district that receives rainfall in excess and in large excess with focus on the five districts- Mahabubabad, Khammam, Muluru, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Suryapet wherein cloudbursts wreaked vengeance in the first week of this month.

  • Normal rainfall in seven districts
  • Large excess recorded in five districts
  • 21 districts receive excess rainfall
  • State recorded 34% above the normal
  • Cumulative rainfall of 898.1 mm from June to Sept 17
