Hyderabad: India reported 86,420 cases of cybercrimes during the year 2023 and the number is increasing year after year. While in 2021 the citizens reported 52,974 cases, the following year the figure was 65,893 cases, while in 2023 it stood at 86,420, according to the National Crime Records Bureau data.
Telangana stood second in the country with citizens reporting 18,236 cases of cybercrime, such as OTP frauds, online banking frauds, ATM frauds, crimes against women etc, while Karnataka topped with 21,889 cases booked during the year.
Also, Hyderabad was in second position when it came to 19 metropolitan cities with a total of 3303 cases reported during the year 2023, while the highest number of cases registered was in Bengaluru with 6423.
Among those reported, 156 cases were of ATM frauds, 709 were about online frauds, while OTP frauds, with 282 cases, were the highest in the country. “In several states, the local police don’t register cybercrime cases because they involve a deeper and technical investigation. In our state, every cybercrime registered is recorded or an FIR issued and investigated,” said a senior official of Cybercrimes.
However, while the police claim to make significant arrests in cybercrime offenses, during the year, the courts acquitted 760 persons in Telangana who were arrested for fraud by the police, while only 26 people were convicted.
