Hyderabad: Telangana reported 228 lightning incidents from 2018 to 2020 while 8,095 incidents occurred during the same time period in India, according to a report shared by the Ministry of Earth Sciences https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1776751.

In 2018, the State witnessed 68 lightning incidents followed by 96 in 2019 and 64 in 2020. In India, 2,357, 2,876, and 2,862 lightning incidents were reported in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively, the Ministry’s report revealed.

Similarly, Andhra Pradesh witnessed 276 lightning incidents during the same time period. In Madhya Pradesh, the highest numbers of lightning incidents 1,210 were reported during 2018-2020.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences, through India Meteorological Department (IMD), issues forecasts and warnings for thunderstorms and associated weather phenomena five days in advance with regular updates. The assistance to the affected families comes under the purview of the respective State Governments.

As per recent studies, lightning activity has shown an increasing trend over India in the past two decades. North-East, East, and parts of peninsular India have registered a sharp increase in lighting over the past two decades. The increase is minimal over Central India and moderates over the rest of the country.

“The increase is minimal over Central India and moderate over the rest of the country. The information pertaining to the illegal cutting of forests is not available with the ministry,” the report stated.
