Hyderabad: After more than 50 days’ break from books, classes and examinations, students are set to return to school as they are reopening for the new academic year 2026-27 on Monday.
Earlier, the schools were to reopen on July 12. However, the School Education Department deferred the reopening to Monday, citing representations from various stakeholders.
In order to compensate for the academic time lost due to the postponement of reopening and ensure adherence to the prescribed instructional days under the academic calendar 2026-27, July 11 (second Saturday) has been announced as a working day for all schools under the department.
Meanwhile, the schools, both government and private, which were bereft of activity in the last two months, have geared up to welcome students. Schools on Saturday engaged in the last-minute cleaning of the classrooms, toilets and playgrounds.
For teachers, the summer vacation ended in the first week of June as they were called to join the work. Apart from giving them enrollment work, teachers were asked to come up with action plans – lesson plans, assessment methods, worksheets and extra-curricular activities for the entire academic year.
As per the academic year 2026-27, the schools will have a total of 227 working days. The first formative assessment has to be completed by July 31 and the second formative assessment by September 21.
The first summative assessment is scheduled between October 1 and 9. The third formative assessment must be completed by December 10, while the fourth formative assessment for Class X students should conclude by January 27, 2027, and by February 15, 2027, for Classes I to IX.
The second summative assessment for Classes I to IX is scheduled from April 9 to 19, 2027. The pre-final exams for Class X students have to be completed before February 28, 2027, and board exams are scheduled in March 2027.
As for short-term vacations, students will have Dasara holidays from October 10 to 22, Christmas vacation for missionary schools from December 23 to 27, and Sankranti vacation from January 13 to 17, 2027. After the last working day for the academic year 2026-27 on April 23, 2027, the schools will have summer break from April 24 to June 13.
