Hyderabad: Telangana government urged the Union Health Ministry to include all citizens above 60 years for the precautionary dose of Covid vaccine irrespective of their comorbidities and consider booster doses to all the citizens above 18 years of age.
Telangana Health Minister, T Harish Rao, in a letter to Union Health Minister, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday, said that apart from expanding the scope of the booster Covid doses, there is a need to decrease the interval between second dose and precautionary dose from 9 months to 6 months.
“At present, data of Covid infections and hospitalisations has proven beyond doubt that vaccines are highly effective and are preventing severe morbidity, hospitalisations and mortality,” he said.
“Based on the experience of booster dose policies of countries like the USA and UK, it is requested to decrease the interval between second dose and precautionary dose from 9 months to 6 months. There is also a need to examine the feasibility of further decreasing the interval between second dose and precautionary dose to 3 months for all the healthcare workers,” Rao in the letter, said.
He requested the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare to examine and consider proposals and issue necessary orders in this regard and protect the population from severe morbidity and mortality associated with Covid-19 infection.
