Hyderabad: The State government has decided to file objections in the Supreme Court against the Polavaram-Nallamalasagar multipurpose irrigation project being constructed by the Andhra Pradesh government, citing serious concerns over submergence of Telangana territory and violation of inter-State agreements.
The State government has engaged senior Supreme Court advocate and former Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi to represent the State in the litigation. Sources confirmed that the State government views the project, especially the proposed Banakacharla reservoir component, as a direct threat to several villages and vast tracts of land in Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mulugu districts.
Preparations are being made ahead of crucial hearings. A high-level preparatory meeting on the Polavaram-Banakacharla case is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi. Later the same day, a delegation led by senior officials and ministers will meet Singhvi at 2:30 pm at his chamber to finalize legal strategy.
