Hyderabad: The State government will establish a new power distribution company (DISCOM) in Telangana to streamline free power schemes and reduce financial pressure on power utilities. This will function alongside the existing TGNPDCL (Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited) and TGSPDCL (Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited).
The new DISCOM will oversee all free electricity initiatives, including free power for agriculture, 200 free units for households, and free electricity to schools and colleges. It will function as a unified body with jurisdiction across the State.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed officials to restructure the power supply network and examine the possibility of restructuring existing loans at lower interest rates.
Officials were also asked to submit proposals to install solar power systems in all government schools, colleges, and offices. District Collectors have been tasked with identifying suitable government buildings for solar panel installation.
To provide solar power at the State Secretariat, the government is also planning to develop parking slots with solar rooftops and solar fencing. Plans are afoot to supply solar-powered pump sets to 2.1 lakh ST farmers under Indira Giri Jala Vikasam.
