Hyderabad: The State government will promote use of compost fertilisers to replace chemical fertilisers for better crop yield and also to improve soil fertility in the State. Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy directed the officials concerned to prepare an action plan in this regard and encourage farmers to opt for compost fertilisers from next crop season.

Expressing concern over increased use of chemical fertilisers in the State during a review meeting on Wednesday, Niranjan Reddy asked the officials concerned to initiate a programme for collection of green manure on a large scale.

He also wanted them to come up with a solution to turn the organic waste in Rythu Bazars and market yards into compost fertilisers. He suggested that the authorities draw fertilisers from the Centre towards October quota and keep them ready for distribution.

As per directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the Minister asked the officials to make all arrangements for purchase of maize and red gram through procurement centres. He asked them to identify vacancies within their respective departments and take necessary action to fill them. He also asked the officials to acquire adequate gunny bags to store paddy and other crops being procured by the State government.

Niranjan Reddy also sought comprehensive reports from the horticulture department on onion and tomato cultivation in the State along with their demand. He suggested that the sale of onion at subsidised price of Rs 35 per kg be continued till the prices are brought under control. Principal Secretary for Agriculture B Janardhan Reddy and other officials attended the meeting.
