Kumram Bheem Asifabad: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has taken suo motu cognisance of a report published in Telangana Today highlighting the plight of pregnant women during the monsoon in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. The commission recently issued notices to the District Collector and the Commissioner, Health and Family Welfare Department, seeking a report on the facts and action taken, dated July 8.
Stating that it had decided to investigate the matter, the Commission directed both officials to submit details and information on action taken within 15 days of receiving the notice. It warned that it may invoke powers vested in it under Article 338(A) of the Constitution of India, which confer it with the authority of a Civil Court, if the response is not submitted within the stipulated time.
The Telangana Today report had highlighted that in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, 128 pregnant women in 151 remote villages were facing serious risks during the monsoon due to flooding and the absence of motorable roads. Health officials have reportedly begun monitoring the situation and planning relocations to ensure timely maternal care and prevent fatalities.
