Hyderabad: The Osmania University (OU) administration has directed authorities to immediately remove the glass and aluminium structure put up near the staircase in the iconic Osmania University College of Arts & Social Sciences, popularly called the Arts College.
Directions to this effect were issued by the university administration following a report ‘OU cares little for heritage norms’ published in these columns on November 14, pointing out that a glass and aluminium structure was set up with the support of rods that were drilled into the wall of the historic building.
The glass and aluminium structure that came up recently in the 80-year-old iconic building was not in tune with heritage conservation laws, with several students and faculty members of the college expressing shock and dismay over the college management’s move to put up such a structure inside the heritage building. Heritage experts too had raised their voice against it.
Speaking to Telangana Today, OU Vice-Chancellor Prof D Ravinder said the structure resembling a glass cage was put up unnecessarily even though there was enough space available in the Arts College.
“The structure is not necessary in the college. I have directed the college officials to remove it immediately,” he said, adding that the university administration had already constituted a committee to rationalise space in the Arts College building.
