Telangana Transport Department plans AI-powered cameras for driving tests

The Telangana Transport Department is exploring AI-based video analytics at six driving test tracks to make licence assessments more transparent and consistent. The first phase will cover five tracks in the Core Urban Region and one at the Karimnagar RTO.

Hyderabad: Artificial Intelligence would soon be testing driving licence applicants in Telangana and deciding whether they are equipped with the required skills to drive a vehicle and navigate traffic.

The Transport Department, having decided to use the latest technology, is exploring possibilities to introduce AI-based video analytics at six driving test tracks. The proposed system aims to make driving tests more transparent and consistent while reducing the scope for human intervention during the assessment process.

According to Transport Department authorities, the first phase is to cover five driving test tracks in the Core Urban Region, including areas under Hyderabad, Malkajgiri and Cyberabad, along with the driving test track at the Karimnagar RTO.

As part of the preparations, Transport Department and HMDA officials recently inspected the Kondapur and Nagole driving test tracks. The teams assessed the existing infrastructure and identified requirements for installing the proposed technology.

The initiative follows a study of automated driving test systems in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. A Transport Department committee that visited the three States recently submitted its findings to Telangana authorities.

Based on the report, the department is learnt to have been working on plans to modernise the selected tracks and introduce AI-based monitoring.

Officials said the technology is expected to enable a more standardised assessment of applicants’ driving performance and strengthen road-safety measures. It is part of the effort to modernise the driving licence testing process and make evaluations less dependent on manual intervention.
