Vikarabad: Seven persons were killed in separate road accidents on Saturday.

five persons including three women were killed and another woman injured in a road crash involving an auto-rickshaw and a truck at Mominpet in Vikarabad district on Saturday morning, the police said.

The incident took place at Ijra Chittampalli village of Mominpet block, when the auto-rickshaw, carrying five agriculture labourers to cotton fields at Shankarpalli, was hit by a speeding truck. The auto driver had stopped the vehicle to pick up some more workers from the village.

Poor visibility in the morning on account of heavy fog in the area could have been the reason for the incident. A RTC bus coming from the opposite direction just mussed being hit by the truck, police said.

“The truck, travelling from Sangareddy to Tandur, was speeding and the driver may have failed to notice the auto-rickshaw parked on the side of the road and rammed into it,” said A Ravi Kumar sub inspector Mominpet police station.

While Sheni Bai (55), Sandhya (18), Nithin (15), Sona Bai (15) died on the spot, another woman Renuka (60) died while undergoing treatment. A few who were in the truck sustained injuries.

Eyewitnesses said the truck first hit a road barricade and later the autorickshaw dragging it for a few metres before overturning on it, crushing the auto. The police and villagers had to struggle to pull out the bodies.

Sheni Bai, Sandhya and Nithin were intermediate students and were accompanying their parents for the work, the police said. The workers are paid around Rs 350 as wages for a day’s work in the cotton fields and transportation is arranged by the contractors.

Cranes were deployed to remove the autorickshaw, truck and the RTC bus. People from nearby villages rushed to the accident spot leading to traffic jam on the Vikarabad road.

Meanwhile, in Siddipet, two persons were killed when their two-wheeler was hit by a speeding lorry on Rajiv Rahadhari at Kondapak bus stage. The victims were identified as Peddoju Ramesh (27) and his brother-in-law Kanukula Sagara Chary (28), both natives of Warangal district. Sagara Chary was a resident of Uppal. The victims were going towards Karimnagar. Ramesh died on the spot while Sagar Chary died in hospital. Kondapak Police have registered a case.
