Hyderabad: The notification for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor as well as the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the urban local bodies (ULBs), which went to elections recently, has been released on Friday. The State Election Commissioner C Parthasarathi instructed the officials concerned to hold the elections in strict adherence to the Covid-19 guidelines.

The SEC held a video conference with the District Collectors, Commissioners of Police, Superintendents of Police and Municipal Commissioners of the districts concerned here on Wednesday to review the arrangements for the elections. The officials informed that all arrangements have been made for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation and Khammam Municipal Corporation as well as the election of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of Achampet, Siddipet, Nakrekal, Jadcherla and Kothur Municipalities. These elections will be conducted after the newly elected ward members swear-in.

Those who got elected in their respective ULBs were eligible to contest for Mayor and Deputy Mayors and Chairman and Vice Chairman posts. The ward members, MLAs, MLCs and ex-officio members can vote in the election as per their party whip, the SEC explained.

At least half of the persons with voting rights should be present at the time of election to maintain quorum and if the quorum was not fulfilled, the election should be conducted the next day. The election presiding officer would inform the meeting date and time one day prior to the election to ward members and others.

The political parties have to submit A-forms by 11 am, a day before the election date and B-forms by 10 am on the election day. Tight security arrangements have to be made besides sanitising the meeting hall, providing face masks and face guards to the members.

The members who were tested positive for the Covid-19 and were in home quarantine should be allowed to swear in through video call and vote in the election in the similar manner. Those violating the covid norms should be booked under relevant sections, Parthasarathi said.
