Mulugu: A chilli farmer died, allegedly by suicide, at Besthagudem village of Venkatapuram mandal in the district on Tuesday.
According to police, Ramella Sathish (39) had cultivated chilli in his three-acre land. He was said to have been upset at the shortage of labourers to harvest the crop, which was falling to the ground causing huge losses to him.
Upset over the developments, he was in a state of depression and had taken to drinking alcohol for the last 15 days.
On Monday morning, he got drunk and went to the chilli field, where he allegedly consumed pesticide in a bid to end his life. Family members, who noticed him unconscious, took him to the Venkatapuram Government Hospital for treatment.
He was later was shifted to MGM Hospital in Warangal for better treatment. However, he died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment.
Based on a complaint from his family members, Sub-Inspector of Police Koppula Tirupati Rao registered a case and began investigation.
