Hyderabad: Telangana has topped the charts in online audit of gram panchayats in the country, having completed the exercise in 3,590 of the 12,769 gram panchayats in the State so far this year. The other States are way behind, with Uttar Pradesh in second position completing online audit in a mere 443 gram panchayats.
Online audit facilitates tracking of expenditure of funds sanctioned by the State and Central governments to gram panchayats. No other State is anywhere close to Telangana on this count. After UP, Himachal Pradesh, which has completed the online audit of 236 gram panchayats, is in third position. In fact, several States are yet to commence online audit of gram panchayats.
The State government had drawn up plans for online audit in June this year. As per Finance Minister T Harish Rao’s directions, Telangana State Audit Director Marthineni Venkateshwara Rao prepared the action plan and commenced the exercise to conduct the online audit.
Despite Central government’s directions to take up 100 per cent online audit of gram panchayats, many States are yet to take up the initiative. So far, only 10 States have commenced online audit of gram panchayats in the country.
The State government is in the forefront of conducting 100 per cent online audit as already 68,737 objections have been raised as part of the audit. In the last financial year, of the 12,769 gram panchyats, the State government completed online audit of 5,174 panchayats and submitted reports accordingly.
