Hyderabad: Proving the BJP State leaders wrong, the Centre on Thursday declared that the Telangana government completed and handed over 1,98,983 houses of total 2,33,108 houses sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) in the State. The Opposition leaders, especially the BJP State leaders, have been accusing the State government of failing to complete the houses for weaker sections and diverting the funds to other purposes.
Since the launch of the PMAY-U scheme in June 2015, the Centre released only Rs 2,827.41 crore to Telangana against total sanctioned amount of Rs 4,057.14 crore towards its share of about 60 per cent of the total unit cost which is about Rs 3 lakh. The State government has not only contributed its 40 per cent funds, but also provided additional funds to deliver the prestigious double-bedroom houses which costs around Rs 7 lakh to the beneficiaries in urban areas.
Responding to a question posed by TDP MP K Ram Mohan Naidu from Andhra Pradesh in the Lok Sabha on ‘Rehabilitation of slum dwellers in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana’, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore released details pertaining to physical and financial progress under In-situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) and other components of PMAY-U in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
Not so surprisingly, the Centre continued its discrimination towards Telangana in sanction of houses as well as funds when compared to other States. As against 2.33 lakh houses allocated to Telangana, the Union government approved 20.4 lakh houses in Andhra Pradesh, 13.52 lakh houses in Maharashtra and 17.67 lakh houses in Uttar Pradesh. Among this, Telangana completed and delivered 1.98 lakh houses to the beneficiaries and performed better than other States where 4.62 lakh houses were handed over to beneficiaries in Andhra Pradesh, 4.78 lakh houses in Maharashtra and 9.48 lakh houses in Uttar Pradesh during the corresponding period.
