Hyderabad: An innovative and pathbreaking artificial intelligence driven crowd monitoring programme used by Telangana police during Asia’s biggest biennial tribal festival – the Medaram jatara has been awarded the AI Gamechanger Exemplar Award by the NASSCOM, it was announced here on Friday. The AI-based application was also used during the India Vs West Indies T20 match played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad two years ago.
The cutting edge technology helped authorities not only detect but also track the variation in the crowd density in a speficied area from time to time. It could also estimate where the crowd may be expected to surge after analysing the trend in events like Medaram Jathara Festival. “With crowd densities being automatically monitored, authorities can take corrective measures like manpower deployment, public announcement, rerouting crowds to less crowded areas to avoid events such as stampedes”, an official statement explained.
Telangana, which realised the importance of inclusion of new-age technologies like Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence in government practices has taken a start up – The Startup – Awiros as its technology partner for the project. The start up has developed several AI-based applications for better governance and citizen safety, the first of which was an AI-based Crowd Estimation and Management application. The applicaation “Crowd Monitoring using AI” was selected for the award from 300+ applications from multiple stakeholders.
The application, it was stated, has a great potential to simplify the process of crowd management. It could be used for religious gatherings, political rallies, sports and other public gatherings or any event attended by large gatherings.
NASSCOM AI Gamechangers was conceptualised to seed awareness and enthusiasm around this technology and encourage others to emulate the successes in the ecosystem. For a thorough view of the landscape, entries across enterprises, start-ups, government bodies, academic institutes, and NGOs, were invited, the press release added.
